Hubertus is an unincorporated community in the Town of Richfield, Washington County, nestled in the rolling hills and hardwood forests of the Holy Hill moraine. The Basilica of Holy Hill — a nationally recognized Catholic shrine perched dramatically on one of Washington County's highest points — draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and stands as the defining visual landmark of the entire Hubertus area. The community itself is quiet, rural, and close-knit, with homes ranging from older farmsteads along County Road K and Emerald Road to newer rural-residential construction on wooded lots.
Burkhardt Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electric serves Hubertus as part of our broader Washington County service area. The drive northwest from our Brown Deer location via Highway 164 puts us in the Hubertus area in under 40 minutes.
What We Know About Hubertus Homes
The same conditions that make Hubertus scenically beautiful also create specific challenges for home mechanical systems. Wooded lots with heavy tree canopy can obstruct outdoor AC condensers with debris, accelerate moisture accumulation on equipment, and limit solar gain — which means heating systems work harder and longer in winter. The area's elevation and exposure can also mean more frequent ice accumulation on outdoor equipment and flue terminations.
Most homes in Hubertus rely on propane or heating oil — natural gas service is not available throughout this part of Washington County — and virtually all properties use private well water. Hard water from Washington County's limestone aquifer is the standard here, and sulfur odor in well water is not uncommon in the hilly terrain west of Holy Hill. Water treatment and conditioning are routine Burkhardt services in this community.

Our Hubertus home is on a wooded lot near Holy Hill and the AC condenser is constantly packed with debris. What can we do?
Keeping two feet of clearance around the condenser and scheduling an annual coil cleaning each spring goes a long way. Burkhardt also recommends checking the unit after major wind events and cottonwood season. We can install a condenser guard cover for off-season protection as well.
We use propane for heat and hot water in Hubertus. How often should the furnace be serviced?
Annually, before the heating season. Propane furnaces need the same maintenance as natural gas units — burner cleaning, heat exchanger inspection, combustion analysis, and controls testing — plus a check of the gas pressure from your propane tank. Burkhardt offers annual maintenance plans that cover all of this.
Our well water in Hubertus has a sulfur smell. Is it treatable?
Yes. Hydrogen sulfide is common in parts of Washington County and can be addressed with an aeration system or catalytic carbon filter specific to sulfur removal. Burkhardt recommends starting with a water test to measure the H2S level and determine the most cost-effective treatment approach.
We're worried about losing heat during a winter power outage at our rural Hubertus home. What are our options?
A generator transfer switch is the most reliable solution. A standby generator connected to a propane supply can run the furnace, well pump, and lights automatically during an outage. Burkhardt Electric designs and installs these systems. Given Hubertus's rural character, it's a worthwhile investment.
Can Burkhardt reach Hubertus for emergency service?
Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency service in Washington County, including Hubertus and the broader Richfield area. Call 414-206-3049 any time.
