Your Air Conditioner Has a Language — Learn to Listen

An air conditioner running properly is relatively quiet — a steady hum from the outdoor unit, a gentle whoosh of air from vents. When new or unusual sounds emerge, they're diagnostic signals worth paying attention to. Milwaukee homeowners who know what different AC noises typically indicate can make faster, better-informed decisions about when to schedule service and what kind of problem to expect.

Common AC Noises and Their Likely Causes

  • Rattling: A rattling sound — particularly during startup or operation — often indicates loose components. This could be a loose panel on the air handler, a fan blade that's slightly unbalanced, or debris (leaves, twigs) that have made their way into the outdoor condenser unit. Start by checking for debris in the outdoor unit and confirming all access panels are secured. If rattling persists, schedule service.
  • Clicking (beyond normal startup and shutdown): A brief click at system startup and shutdown is normal as the compressor contactor engages and disengages. Repeated clicking that doesn't result in the system starting — or clicking during operation — suggests a failing relay, contactor, or control board issue.
  • Squealing or screeching: High-pitched squealing often indicates a bearing failing in the blower motor or outdoor fan motor. It can also indicate a worn fan belt in older systems. This sound typically worsens over time and indicates a component that needs service before it fails completely.
  • Grinding: A grinding sound is a more advanced bearing failure warning. The metal-on-metal sound indicates significant wear that will result in motor failure if not addressed. Schedule service promptly.
  • Hissing or bubbling: Hissing sounds from AC components often indicate refrigerant escaping from a leak in the refrigerant circuit. Bubbling may indicate refrigerant flowing through an area where it shouldn't have moisture or air. Both suggest refrigerant system issues requiring professional diagnosis.
  • Banging: Loud banging from the outdoor unit may indicate a loose or broken component inside the compressor — a serious problem that can quickly escalate. Turn the system off and call for service if banging is loud or persistent.
  • Humming without starting: A system that hums but doesn't start often has a failed capacitor — the component that provides the electrical boost to start the compressor and fan motors. Capacitor replacement is a relatively simple repair that restores function.

When to Call Immediately

Grinding, banging, and hissing — particularly when accompanied by reduced cooling performance — warrant prompt professional response. Continuing to operate a system making these sounds typically causes additional damage that makes the eventual repair more expensive.
